No 3D File? How to Get a Part Made From a Sketch or Photo

You don't need to know CAD to get something printed. Here's how to go from an idea or a broken part to a print-ready file — including the designers we can connect you with.

The most common message we get on WhatsApp isn't about materials or turnaround times. It's some version of: "I need this part made, but I don't have a 3D file — can you still help?" The short answer is yes. Layerzim itself is a print-for-hire service, so we print from a file rather than designing one in-house, but we work with a network of independent 3D designers and can put you in touch with the right one for your project. Here's how the whole process actually works.

First: why a file is needed at all

A 3D printer doesn't work from a photo or a drawing. It works from a 3D model — a digital description of the object's exact geometry — which gets sliced into the layers the machine builds up. A photo of a broken bracket tells us what it looks like; it doesn't tell the printer how thick the wall is or where the bolt holes sit. That gap between "a picture of the thing" and "a model of the thing" is what a designer closes.

Step 1: Check whether the model already exists

Before paying anyone to design anything, it's worth checking whether someone has already modelled it. Free and paid model libraries — Printables, Thingiverse, GrabCAD, Cults3D — hold hundreds of thousands of ready-to-print files, and a surprising number of common items are already there: phone and camera mounts, organiser trays, hose fittings, appliance knobs, replacement clips for well-known equipment. Some manufacturers also publish CAD files for their own products.

If you find something close but not exact, tell us anyway. Minor scaling is sometimes possible, and it also gives a designer a strong starting point rather than a blank screen — which usually means a cheaper, faster job.

Step 2: Get it designed — we'll connect you

If no existing model fits, this is where our designer network comes in. We've built up working relationships with independent CAD designers who handle exactly this kind of work: reverse-engineering a broken part from measurements, modelling a bracket or enclosure to fit specific hardware, or taking a product concept from sketch to something manufacturable.

The arrangement is simple and transparent. Send us your photos, measurements, and a description of what the part has to do. We'll match you with a designer suited to that type of work, and they quote you directly for the design — design work is a separate service from printing, priced by the designer, not marked up by us. Once you have a file you're happy with, it comes back to us for the print quote. You own the file at the end of it, which means reprints later cost you nothing extra in design time.

Complexity drives everything here. Copying a simple flat bracket with three holes is a quick job. A watertight enclosure with snap fits, threaded inserts, and internal mounting bosses is real engineering work and priced accordingly. The designer will tell you which one you have before you commit.

What to send with your request

The quality of what you send largely determines the cost and the number of revisions. Aim to include:

Reverse-engineering vs. designing something new

These are two different jobs. Reverse-engineering means recreating something that already exists — a discontinued spare part, a fitting nobody stocks locally. The target is known and success is easy to measure: it either fits or it doesn't. Designing something new — a product concept, a custom jig, an enclosure for your own electronics — involves decisions about form, function, and how it will be used, so expect more back-and-forth and at least one test print before committing to a batch.

For anything new, budget for a prototype. Printing one part to check fit before ordering twenty is almost always cheaper than discovering a 2 mm error after the batch is done — which is the whole point of rapid prototyping.

What happens after the file exists

Once you have a model, you're back on the standard path: the designer exports it in a format we can print from — STL, OBJ, STEP, or 3MF — and our file format guide covers which to ask for and why it matters.
