PLA vs PETG vs ABS vs TPU: a practical guide to picking the right filament for your project, adjusted for Harare's climate and what's actually available locally.

Choosing the right material is often the single biggest factor in whether a 3D printed part actually does its job. A part that looks identical in two different plastics can behave completely differently once it's out in the sun on a Harare rooftop, holding weight in a workshop, or flexing as a phone case. Material Comparison

PLA

Polylactic Acid: a biodegradable thermoplastic made from renewable resources. The easiest material to print with, giving crisp detail and a clean finish.

PETG

Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol: durable, chemical-resistant, and tougher than PLA while still relatively easy to print. A strong all-rounder for functional parts.

ABS

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene: a tough, heat-resistant industrial plastic used widely in automotive and appliance parts. Trickier to print but handles higher temperatures than PLA or PETG.

TPU

Choosing for Zimbabwe's Climate

Harare's strong sun and temperature swings matter when picking a material for outdoor use. PLA is the cheapest and easiest to print but softens in direct sun and high heat, so it's not the right choice for a part left on a car dashboard or an outdoor sign. PETG holds up far better outdoors and resists UV better than PLA, making it our default recommendation for anything that lives outside, like the Starlink mounts and outdoor brackets we regularly print for clients. ABS handles heat well but is more prone to warping during printing and needs careful handling, and it's best suited to parts that need real heat resistance, like automotive components near an engine bay.

Matching Material to Application

For rapid prototypes where you just need to check fit and form, PLA is usually the fastest and cheapest option. For production parts that need to survive real use, PETG or ABS is typically the better call. For anything that needs to flex, such as gaskets, phone cases, and wearable straps, TPU is the only material on this list built for the job. And for architectural models, PLA's fine detail and clean finish usually wins out over PETG's toughness.
